BENTONVILLE -- The Benton County Web site began Thursday to list information about inmates of the county jail.

The move is part of the effort by Benton County to improve information available through the World Wide Web, said Tom Brewster, public-information deputy for the sheriff's office.

It will also save the sheriff's office time because questions about inmates can be answered without taking up deputies' time, Brewster said.

The list can be accessed by logging onto the Benton County home page at http://www.co.benton.ar.us, then clicking on the link to the sheriff's office.

Once the sheriff's office page comes up, users may click on the inmate list.

There are three ways to view the list.

All inmates may be listed by arrest date and arresting agency, alphabetically or by current charges.

The listings will be updated daily at 5:30 a.m., according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office made the change because inmate information is something the public has a right to know, Brewster said.

"We have been working on trying to improve the county Web site and make more information available to the people out there," Brewster said.

He said the sheriff's office intends to further improve its Web page, although the next step hasn't been decided, Brewster said.
